BLUE PLANET...

To save life below water...

Project " BLUE PLANET" organized by SLTC Leos was successfully completed on 23rd August 2019 at Egodahena beach, Moratuwa. This was the first environmental project of the new leoistic year 2019/2020 of SLTC Leo's.

 

The biggest source of pollution in the ocean is directly from human activities. 80% of the pollution happens from the land. Every day thousands of trash and waste are dumped into the ocean. 90% of floating materials are plastic and polythene. These plastics are harmful to the animals who live in the ocean because they do not decompose and it’s one of the biggest environmental threats. Polythene and plastics are considered as food by marine animals. Plastic kills more than one million seabirds and 100,000 mammals(seals, whales, dolphins) and sea turtles every year. 12 billion gallons of municipal wastewater is discharged into oceans. (United States national research council report ) Because of the small size, sea animals often eat micro plastic (tiny pieces of plastic) and it contains toxic chemicals which can affect reproduction and impair their defense against diseases. Because of this animals may suffer for months or years before they die. Micro plastics, abandoned fishing gear and other plastic pollution are among our biggest environmental threats. As the volume of ghost gear (fishing equipment abandoned or lost in the sea) increases, the volume of micro plastic increases because fishing gear left in oceans converts into micro plastics over time. As a result, more animals could be poisoned. If we do our part in reducing plastic pollution by recycling and reducing single-use items, we can prevent ocean pollution and make the world a better place for aquatic animals.

However at the end of the day Leos could collect huge amount of plastic, polythene bags, broken bottle pieces and many other garbage in Egodahena beach and we decided to recycle that garbage in a proper way. The main reason for this kind of environmental problems is, people do not think to protect environment though environment protect human. And also Leos think to make an Impact on people to think about above manner from these kind of projects, because people have a responsibility to protect the environment.
